Blurb:

Leslie Braddock feels responsible for her husband’s death. She is having trouble reentering the dating scene. Leslie travels back in time where she meets Sir James.

Sir James Winford is a three-time widower. He believes he is cursed, and is certain death to any woman he loves. He has vowed never to love again.

Emily, the ghost of Sir James's first wife has unfinished business, and still lingers at Winford Manor. She wants to see her husband happy, and she wants to bring her murderer to justice.

Leslie and Sir James share the experience of losing a loved one. Will Leslie be the woman to break the curse? Or will she be just another victim.

A NOTE FROM LOC GLIN:
Thank you for popping in today. The Curse of Winford Manor is an interesting story. The characters demanded that I change my original storyline. The twists and turns at the end I contribute entirely to them. I hope you like where their lives took me.

I love to read historical romance. but I find the research entirely too bothersome. While writing this story the research was both confounding and exhilarating. I learned many things and tried to incorporate some of that knowledge into the story. I hope you enjoy the end result.

If you want to read the entire 1st chapter, I will supply the link to my website at the end of the excerpt.
 Excerpt:
Leslie searched for the road that led to the Gypsy camp. What was I thinking? When Stephanie canceled I should have just stayed home. “There it is. It’s a wonder anyone can find it at all.” She turned onto the dirt road. It was getting difficult to see in the fading light. Her small car found every bump in the road. Finally, she thought as the camp came into view. The bonfire in the middle of the camp and the music gave the place a mysterious and exotic feel. Darkness had settled in for the night.
“Excuse me,” she said to a young boy running by. “Where can I find the fortune teller?”
The boy stopped and smiled, showing his missing front teeth. “She’s in the blue wagon with the stars and moons.” He pointed in its direction before he dashed away. She was glad he added the stars and moons, because there were three blue wagons, each wildly decorated. She parked the car and made her way to the wagon. The people around the camp fire glanced up and then went back to their conversation. The music never stopped. She reached up and hesitated a moment. Maybe she should go home. She felt sort of strange. Oh well, she was here. She pushed her reservations aside and knocked on the door.
A middle-aged woman in Gypsy garb, complete with kerchief around the head, jewelry, and bangles, answered. “Come in,” she said as she opened the door.
Leslie stepped up and entered a scene straight from the movies. Heavy curtains, beads, and ornate upholstery adorned the room. Two chairs and a table were in the center of the room. A crystal ball and a deck of tarot cards were placed off to the side on the table. Both sat patiently waiting for the fortune teller. Incense burned. Its fragrance added to the ambiance of the setting.
“Have a seat,” the woman said. Her hand made a graceful but exaggerated gesture toward the chair. “I am called Madam Galina. You are here to have your fortune told. Yes?”
“Yes,” Leslie said as she settled into the chair.
Madam Galina made a great show of rustling her skirt and clinking her bangles as she passed Leslie. She settled gracefully into her chair. She settled her skirt just so about her. “Let us get started. Give me your hands,” she ordered. Her thick accent added to the mysterious allure of the moment.
Leslie put her hands onto the table. Madam Galina took first one and then the other. She examined each carefully. She rubbed her thumb across Leslie’s open palm as if she were trying to clear away a smudge as she examined them. She squinted and frowned. It was a few minutes before she spoke. “You have had a loss in your life, and it makes you unhappy.”
It doesn’t take much to guess that. “Yes.”
“One moment while I consult my crystal,” she said as she moved her hands in circles over the crystal ball, now in the center of the table. Madam Galina’s rings caught the light and sparkled. Her bangles slid on her arms creating a rhythmless music all their own.
The music outside, Galina’s bangles clinking, it all felt so contrived. How could Stephanie believe any of this?
“My crystal ball is of no use. All I can see is fog, nothing beyond that.” Madam Galina wrinkled her brow. “Quite unusual and disturbing I must say.”
I bet.
“Maybe the cards can clear up the mystery. May I do a tarot card reading?” Madam Galina asked.
“Sure.”
“Please shuffle the deck.” Frowning once again, she handed the cards to Leslie. Leslie shuffled the deck. “I’ve never seen fog in my crystal before. What could it mean?” she mumbled as Leslie handed the cards back to her. She then used a Tree of Life spread to read Leslie’s fortune.

* * * *

What can I tell this woman? Madam Galena thought as she looked at the cards. They point to no future, but not to death. Does that mean she’ll be in a coma? The cards about her past are clear. I can see the lost love. As for romance, a love will come into her life, and soon, but even that is strange. Leslie fidgeted in her seat, bringing Madam Galina’s attention back to her. “I am sorry it has taken me so long.”
“That’s okay,” Leslie said politely. Her face didn’t quite hide her agitation or her apprehension. “Stephanie said you were good. Maybe this is what she meant.”
“I am sorry if I have frightened you,” Galina apologized. “May I continue?”
“Yes.”
“I see a man coming into your life.” That much was true. “I see a promotion at work or possibly a change in your job. I see a change of residence.” She saw these things, but they were jumbled, so she lied or guessed, depending on how you looked at it. “And I see car trouble.”
“Everyone has car trouble sooner or later,” Leslie whispered. “A tall, dark stranger?” Leslie asked sardonically.
“Actually, yes, I know it sounds cliché, but there will be a tall man entering your life very soon. I can tell you things about your past if you like. Some of the things I have mentioned may have already happened. The cards indicate they have, but also that they will. Your future is not clear enough for me to say.” At least that is the truth.
“No, no that’s enough. How much do I owe you?”
Madam Galina looked at the cards again. In all her years of reading fortunes, this was the first that truly puzzled her. “For that reading I cannot charge you. I usually receive more information from the cards. I am sorry.” She shook her head. She was puzzled and could only hope that no harm would come to the young woman sitting across from her.
“You’re not charging me?”
“Well, if you want me to...” she said as she stood.
“No, that’s quite all right,” Leslie put the strap of her purse over her shoulder as she rose from the seat and moved toward the exit. She opened the door. “Fog,” she said as she stepped outside.
Madam Galina gasped and put her hand to her chest.
“Thank you,” Leslie said. She carefully stepped down and out of the wagon.
“Be careful,” Madam Galina said. She made the sign of the cross, blessing herself, and said a silent prayer.

"What was your name again?" She turned to me. She had lost her the shorts and only wore a thin t-shirt.

I handed her the water bottle and tried not to stare at her legs.

"Cody Travis." She uncapped the bottle as she crawled into bed.

The shirt rode up, giving me a stellar view of her ass. She wasn't wearing anything
underneath. She flipped onto her front and covered herself with the blank. In covering herself, she managed to snake the blanket between her legs. My mind really wanted to see what she was hiding under that blanket.

She held the blank just under her chin. Her bare legs visible on each side.

"You can lay down with me, if you want." She said, her eyes staring into mine.

My eyes grew wide, which for some reason gave Briann an invitation to dropped the blanket
and crawl back to the end of the bed and run her hands up underneath my shirt.

"Whoa, what are you doing?"

"You really are adorable." She rustled my hair like you'd do to a ten year old. "Come
cuddle with me."

I stepped away from the bed and she sat down on her knees. The sexiest pout on her lips.

"I'd like to, but I can't." It was the only explanation I could think of at the moment and it wasn't a good one. No explanation was good enough. My cock reminded me of that as it pushed on my zipper.
"Of course you can." She said as she spread her legs.

Thank God, the t'shirt covered her or my self control would have melted.

I was two seconds away from forgetting how my mother raised me and jumping her.

"I would really love to, but I think it's safer if I go." I said.

She blinked her eyes and bit her lip.

Oh, fuck if she didn't make this hard.

Pun intended.

I sat in the same spot, stunned, shocked.

Guilty as fuck.

I should of said something. Instead I sat there like a pussy. I should have gone after her and made sure she was okay. I froze after seeing the devastation in her normally bright brown eyes.

Twenty minutes later, I hadn’t moved.

Faye Hall ~ presents ~ Indulgence and Temperance

Indulgence and Temperance
by Faye Hall

Genre(s): Historical Romance

Content Warning:
Story contains sex, strong language, and some violence

BLURB:
Would you abandon the woman you love for your own indulgence?

Beth Meridian has returned home, hoping to leave her sordid past behind her and settle into a quiet life. When her childhood friend, Hannah Raeburn, offers her a place to stay, Beth knows it won’t be long until she runs into Hannah’s brother, Daniel. What she doesn’t expect is for him to reignite feelings deep in her heart, reminding her of the kiss they shared before she left town.

Daniel Raeburn’s past is scandalous, his sinful indulgences allowing him more wealth than he could ever need. Still, he wants more, and his gluttonous appetite for wealth and women leads him to buy into a partnership at the local hellfire club.

When Hannah goes missing, Beth and Daniel follow her trail through the Australian outback. Witnessing the womanizer Daniel is, Beth flees on a cattle train headed north. Desperate to explain his actions, Daniel follows her.

Arriving in the small town of Jarvisfield, Daniel is shocked to learn that Beth is now the owner of the largest cattle company in the area. He’s even more shocked to discover that the preacher controlling the town, and stealing from the townspeople, is his once business partner William Maxon. He’s convinced this man is also responsible for his sister’s disappearance. When he learns William has Beth picked out as his next victim, Daniel knows he must do whatever it takes to make her listen to the truth. But she has no interest in hearing anything he has to say.

Faced with losing the two women he loves, Daniel is forced to choose between their freedom and the possessions and wealth he has hoarded over the years. But even if he gives it all up, he still might lose everything.

EXCERPT:
“What would you have me do? Pretend that this man chasing my sister is genuine and not some money-grabbing monster?”

“You don’t know him,” she tried again.

“Neither does she,” he said, his voice raised. “And neither do you.”

She went to walk past him, following Hannah’s direction out the back of the house. He reached out, his hand on her forearm stopping her.

“I didn’t mean to sound so harsh, Beth,” he said. “I’m sorry.”

She nodded as if understanding. “I understand that you love your sister. So do I. I shan’t just sit back and watch her walk into a trap. Nor shall I stand by and watch as her brother robs her of a chance of what may be happiness.”

“How dare you presume to know what I want for my sister.”

She pulled away from him. “I dare because I grew up with you. Every time your sister wanted to do something you always had to interfere.”

“She is naïve,” he told her. “Had I not taken control of her life, heaven knows what would have happened to her.”

She raised her brow. “I understand you need to protect Hannah against lecherous men. That doesn’t explain why you had to be her constant chaperone when she was meeting up with me.”

He lowered his gaze. “I needed to go with her.”

“Do you think that I would also take advantage of your sister?” she asked. “That I have prolonged our friendship only so I might get my claws into her fortune?”

He shook his head, his gaze cautiously rising back to hers. “I know you would do anything for my sister, Beth.”

“Then why did you need to follow Hannah everywhere we went?”

“I did it for you,” he whispered, the words being dragged from him.

“What?” she asked.

He smiled softly. “I played chaperone for my sister so I might be able to see you,” he repeated. “In the hope that you would notice me.”

“All you ever had to do was ask,” she whispered. Approaching him, her lips gently fused to his.

His hands went to her upper arms, pushing her away. “What are you doing?” he asked. Trying desperately to grip onto what remained of his control, he reminded himself that being here with this woman so intimately was far from appropriate. No matter how much he desired her, he couldn’t afford to succumb to such passion. Not there, and certainly not now.

She shook off his hold, her fingers hesitantly going to the buttons of his shirt. Slowly, she began undoing them one by one. “Do you remember the last time we saw each other before I left town?” she asked.

His hands went to hers, stilling her movements. “The image of you that day…” His words drifted off. He didn’t understand why she was acting this way with him, but he couldn’t deny that her movements were ripping at his restraint. He had always hungered for this woman, but now that she was there with him like this, he couldn’t help but wonder why. “Why did you send for me that day?” he asked, his words strained.

“I wanted to see you before I left town,” she muttered. Shaking off his hands, she continued unbuttoning his shirt. “Do you ever wonder what would have happened had your sister not arrived?”

GUEST POST:
The Writing Process

Becoming a writer takes a great deal of time, effort, focus, energy, and a willingness to fail.  Of course, these attributes are true for every endeavor in which one desires to become successful.

I have been a writer for my entire life.  As a child, I sought to be published in our school’s small newsletter.  My mother still has the two sentence passage I wrote that was printed when I was in the first grade.  It was my first published work!  Throughout my life, I have worked at the craft – earning small accolades over the years: a story printed in a high school literary magazine and a few years later, another story printed in my college’s literary magazine.  People told me I had “talent,” but, if I did, the talent was raw.

Over the years, I have crafted numerous books.  These ranged from a history of the Beatles to a “how to be a better teacher” book.  The educational book was considered for publication many years ago, but it needed a significant level of work and attention that I was unable to invest as an husband and active father of three growing boys.  I was also busy with my profession as a teacher and school administrator and working towards, and eventually receiving, my Doctorate in Education.  Being a published author would have to wait!

Still, I kept writing as a hobby if not a vocation.

When I became a principal, my memos to my staff began becoming longer and longer.  A Weekly Memo that I began publishing for my staff became a place for me to share my thoughts on a plethora of educational subjects.  As teacher interest grew, so did the length of the passages.  I started to become proficient in essay writing.

At the same time, I had a novel in my head that was fighting to get out.  I began to invest some of my free time in the novel.  I found that writing in this way came somewhat easily to me.  I thoroughly enjoyed the writing process.  Once the first draft of the novel was complete, I began to try my hand at children’s books – another area where I have a passion.

I, of course, have always been a prolific reader.  I love language.  My reading inspired my writing.  As I wrote more, I read more – one discipline helping the other.  I also searched for ways to build my craft.  I joined an organization for writers and attended conferences and writing craft weekends.  I met some published authors and listened to their advice.  One wonderful author, Rob Skead, gave a great deal of help to me – including sharing the name of an outstanding editor, Britta Eastburg Friesen, with me.  Britta has become my editor.  I cherish her advice, help, kindness, and support.

I have pitched my books to many publishers and literary agents.  I have received great feedback.  Many have also told me the same story – “I like your writing, but I can’t offer you a contract.”  I have learned, many times, what failure feels like.  I faced book rejections for many of my works for many years.

Yet, I kept at it.  I started a blog that has received a great deal of positive feedback.  I submitted my writings to on-line and print publications – and have been published a number of times in those forums.  I began working on other writing projects including a detailed and very unique history of the New York Yankees that has received a good deal of interest.

Writing is my hobby.  I love to write.  Yet, I love my profession as the principal of the most wonderful, dynamic, child-centered elementary school in the world.  I also enjoy sharing my passion for education, with a focus on children, by presenting workshops at educational conferences.

The writing process never ends.  I continually improve my craft.  My family and friends who offer critiques help me grow.  My editor, Britta, pushes me a great deal.  I’ll probably never be fully satisfied with my writing, I’ll always feel I can do better, but when I see the smiles in my readers’ eyes, and receive positive feedback from followers, I know I’m making a positive difference one reader at a time.

It’s great to be a writer!
